If you have read my earlier blog on the “Thyroid: Top 5 working remedies to fight weight gain“, you are familiar with my story of recovery from Hypothyroidism. This fight against Thyroid underperformance has been very long and strenuous for me. But now I just can’t go back to my old lifestyle. I live by the 5 important aspects of lifestyle improvement that lead to better thyroid control.

Let’s jump to some thyroid workout and dietary tips that you came here to read:

Thyroid Friendly Workouts

Strength Training

Strength Training of the whole body is the first and most important recommendation for Thyroid patients. Not exercising is not an option at all. And the luxury with strength training is that you can do them anytime, anywhere with minimal or no equipment. Simple bodyweight exercises like lunges, planks, push-ups, crunches, burpee, and jumping jacks can do the job. If nothing, try Yoga. If you have not yet heard of the benefits of Sarvangasana in thyroid secretion, you are missing out. It is loaded with the goodness of breathing regulatory workouts.

Weight Training

I hope that the readers of this blog have grown beyond the age-old myths of “Girls shouldn’t do weights”. In the fear of looking muscular, a lot of women steer clear from weight training. But really, to get your thyroid glands going, you have to start including it in your regular workouts. Weight training encourages your bones to store more calcium thus supporting the action of calcitonin. Calcitonin is an integral part of the secretions from the thyroid gland. Focus each day separately on the arms, legs, chest, and shoulders. Modify the exercise intensity if you don’t see the impact and rewards at low intensity.

Cardio Fits All

No workout is complete without a bit of cardio. Cardio improves the mobility of fatty acids in the thyroid system. Getting your heart rate going with some repetitive cardiovascular movements can go a long way with not just Thyroid recovery but overall immunity improvement for the body. Whether you love to walk, run, swim, cycle, or just skip, include cardio in your workouts. For a lot of people walking or jogging is the easiest workout to start with. Pull your family or friend for a refreshing morning jog and see the benefits in your thyroid performance overtime. Running has changed my life, so I am really biased towards this one.

Dietary Tips For Thyroid Relief

What To Eat?

  • Start with increasing iodine-rich nutrients in your food. Bring back bananas, carrots, berries, and whole grains to your diet.
  • No matter how good and healthy your daily nutrition is, you can absolutely not ignore the thyroid medication dosage recommended by the Doctor. There is still no direct organic source of Thyroxine Sodium itself. Depending on natural sources for Thyroxine will certainly be a long shot.
  • If you are a vegetarian, start having more spinach and curd. For nonvegetarians, eggs are known to be iodine and selenium-rich which better the thyroid performance. Chicken is great for a punch of zinc.

What Not To Eat?

  • The first thing that any Doctor tells you to eliminate from your diet is the cruciferous vegetables like avoid cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussel sprouts. Research says that these vegetables block the glands from utilizing iodine and in turn underperform.
  • Caffeine in moderation is not a villain. But having multiple cups of coffee in a day can hinder thyroid secretion. The consumption of caffeine-rich drinks immediately after taking Thyroid medication can hamper with the benefits of the medicine.
  • You must have heard stories of people who recovered from Thyroid issues by cutting out sugar from their lives. There is no proof that guarantees this tip to work for all. But the spikes of insulin from sugar consumption do compromise the thyroid gland.
