How not to travel the world

how not to travel

This post is a dig at the superficial tourist mentality versus the more ethical traveller mindset. So, read with a pinch of salt, my take on how not to travel the world.

Carry everything but the kitchen sink

A jacket for every day, matching shoes for every outfit, accessories for the exclusive Instagram moment and your favourite eatables. All of this has to accompany you on your journey whether it is a short vacation or long. If you budget well, you could book extra baggage to include some bedding and pillows you are comfortable with. You never know whether the destination will have any pharmacies, so carry medication for all possible medical issues that come to your mind.

Cover every spot on the itinerary

Many of us travel to places only once. And it is an absolute pain to learn from the internet about some famous spots you missed. So, list all the popular sightseeing places in the city you are going to. Spend on cabs if you have to, that way you will be able to cover everything on the list. A quick photo of the spot and jump back into the cab. Travel goals achieved.

Stick to the food you know

Being Indian means that there is often only the choice of pizza or burgers as familiar meals during trips. Trying local dishes means we must keep an open mind for unfamiliar tastes that may or may not be successful. The best way is to stick to Indian restaurants in the city or run to the nearest McDonald’s. The best part is to dispose of to-go packages anywhere you like. Parks offer a great place to be littered.

Stick to the language you know

Most of the countries do understand English. Also, most of India speaks English. Learning new knowledge would be a burden for just a short trip. It is easier to get a friend who knows the local language or stick to English-speaking cabs and shops. It is rude of some cities to think of protecting their language why not learn the global official language of English? Use Google Translate, if at all you are stuck in a situation where you have to deal with non-English-speaking locals.

Shop till you drop

Since you have already booked the extra luggage on your flight, why not shop for everything that your destination is remotely famous for? Pursue the marketing gimmicks of various shops to fill your luggage with multiple souvenirs, clothes and home decorations. Be prepared to use cash or a card at every sign that says “Sale”.

Dive into your Social Media

Refer to the list of famous spots for your daily itinerary. Do not forget to sweep through Instagram for the best poses to photograph that spot in. Pick the outfits that match the itinerary of each day. It is a great idea to plan pictures for the various social media ahead of time. Reels can be a great way to record moments including music or performances. It can get quite boring to keep the phone away and immerse yourself in the moment. All that is for old-school travellers.

What else annoys you in the tourists you see around you? I am sure this list of how not to travel, is not complete yet.
