Habit Series: 15 Ways to Help You Manage Your Sleep

reach office on time

Last month, I worked on fixing my sleep. I tried various techniques to improve my sleep quality. I have followed 3 months of waking up at 5 am successfully before. But even though I woke up at the same time, I rarely went to sleep at the same time. This meant that I was compromising on the length and quality of my sleep.

I decided that I ease up on the 5 am criteria and focus on creating a good evening time routine to unwind and sleep at the same time regularly. The wake-up time will take care of itself with or without alarm.

So, here are a few tactics that came in handy in fixing my sleep pattern. Hope this helps you too.

Eliminate Gadgets:

1. Listen to your favorite playlist before sleep to put you in a good mood.

2. Put your phone away so that the next morning you have to get out of bed to turn the alarm off.

3. Turn off all of your screens at least 1 hour before bed to get your brain ready to sleep.

Monitor Nutrition:

4. Reward yourself with a tasty breakfast so you have more motivation to wake up early.

5. Drink lots of water after you wake up, you’re not going to feel too tired throughout the day. Stop drinking water 1 hour before bed so you don’t have to wake up at night.

6. Eat dinner early, since you’ll digest your food earlier. Your body can focus on getting the restful sleep it needs.

7. Eat magnesium-rich food like almonds, peanuts, or zinc-rich foods like mushrooms, chickpeas to improve sleep.

Regulate Exercise:

8. Have a quick morning workout/run, this will help you feel energized during the day and sleepy when you should be going to bed.

9. Meditate and say some positive affirmations before bed, it’s relaxing and stress-reducing.

10. Expend energy during the day so you feel tired at night.

Create A Schedule:

11. Try to wake up at the same time every day, consistency is the key.

12. Pre-plan your activities tonight and make your to-do list for the next morning.

13. Set a reminder that will alert you 30 minutes before its time to go to bed.

Embrace Rituals:

14. After dinner, dim the lights, put your cozy pajamas on, read a book, and prepare to relax and let your mind unwind.

15. Open the windows and make your bed after waking up so you won’t be tempted to go back there. Head straight to the bathroom and wash your face before you drift back to the mattress.
