If you have been following my blogs, you know by now that I am a junkie for habit building. It excites me to build new habits. It refreshes me in daily life and helps stay positive.

#1 Educate Yourself

Begin with understanding the new habit inside out. Read articles, watch videos, and talk to friends to follow it already. This will help you decide whether you are interested enough or not. Also, helps you find a strong motivating reason to start it. The reason could be fame, fitness, productivity or simply peace of mind. Research helps you understand the purpose better.

#2 Accountability

Announce to friends, family, or on social media. Inform someone close to you. Not telling anyone is too safe. Playing too safe means that you are neither confident nor accountable to see this habit challenge through. Most people work better on peer pressure. So, use that fear to push yourself for a good cause.

#3 Microchunking

Break down the habit in such small and easy chunks that it feels stupid to not do it. For example, you want to work out regularly. Start with just 5 minutes of workout. Try just dressing up for a Yoga session and nothing else. Slowly it will start feeling tempting to dress up and do some asanas at least.

#4 Repetition

Keep the habit easy and keep doing it over and over. You may not see the benefits right away but in the long term, you will reach bigger goals more easily. If you want to play your favorite song on that untouched Guitar of yours. Get down to playing the main notes over and over. Achieving small goals creates a happy hormone Dopamine. This hormone, in turn, motivates me to do more.

#5 Join A Group

If you are like me, your internal motivation can keep you going for months. But most people can’t relate to it. Having a buddy for a new habit helps. It is not always possible to catch a friend and make him take the new habit with you. It is easier to join a group of people who are already doing it. And hey, you will have the benefit of making new friends too.

Bonus: Reward Yourself

I said 5 hacks but here is a bonus for reading this whole article – Give yourself a carrot. Rewards have worked for centuries in motivating human beings. Set a reward before starting the new habit. Once you reach your goal, be sure to reward yourself. Better yet, celebrate every small win on the way.
