How Immune Are You To CoronaVirus?

There is a lot of uncertainty and ignorance around the people who are immune to COVID-19 or not. I tried to gather some information on this here:

Who Is Particularly At Risk?

It is common knowledge that children under the age of 12 and persons over the age of 65 are particularly at risk. The following pre-existing conditions put a person in the high-risk category:

  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Chronic respiratory diseases
  • Diabetes
  • Diseases or treatments that weaken the immune system
  • High blood pressure
high risk category for coronavirus

WHO has also mentioned that smokers are likely to be more vulnerable to COVID-19. The act of smoking means that fingers (or contaminated cigarettes) are in contact with lips which increases the possibility of transmission of the virus from hand to mouth. Conditions that increase oxygen needs or reduce the ability of the body to use it properly will put patients at higher risk of serious lung conditions such as pneumonia.

Research is currently underway to understand the impacts of COVID 19 infection on pregnant women. However, due to changes in their bodies and immune systems in general, pregnant women can be badly affected by some respiratory infections.

Typical Symptoms Of Coronavirus:

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Some patients may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea. These symptoms begin gradually. Some people become infected but don’t develop any symptoms and don’t feel unwell. About 80% recover from the disease without needing special treatment. Around 1 out of every 6 people who get COVID-19 becomes seriously ill and develops difficulty breathing.

Questions To Check Corona Symptoms:

Gender – Recent research has proven that men are more vulnerable to COVID 19 virus compared to women. The reasons vary from poor lung capacity due to smoking, to lower innate antiviral immune responses.

Age group Older people above the age of 65 are most vulnerable to the Corona disease. Even if some younger people come in contact with the virus, they recover better or do not catch the disease due to better immunity.

Any critical disease – It is well established already, that irrespective of the age or gender if a person has critical disease history, he is vulnerable.

Contact with Spreader – Even if the immunity is good, if you or your family visited a foreign country in the last 14 days, you become a possible carrier of the virus. Local or International public transport can lead to such vulnerability. You never know which confirmed or unconfirmed COVID carrier/spreader did you come in contact with.

COVID symptoms:

  • Fever
  • A headache
  • Dry cough
  • Cold with oozing nose
  • Sore throat
  • Shortness of breath
  • The coarseness of the voice

A combination of any of the above reasons can put you under HIGH-RISK category.

Getting Tested

testing for corona

Special risk persons should keep their distance from other people when outside, by way of Social Distancing. If this is not possible, they should better be at home at all times.

For any of the above reasons, if you are under the HIGH-RISK category, you should be in quarantine for the next 14 days. If you have evident symptoms live fever, dry cough, or shortness of breath, better to test yourself for Corona.
