How To Save Money On Clothes

Please read about the 4 steps to organizing your wardrobe before you continue. I elaborated on the first step of clustering here. The second step of decluttering here. The third step of reinventing your style here. And now we will talk about how to save money on clothes.

#1 Planning To Buy

Plan ahead regarding what you want to buy. Check your wardrobe just like you would check your fridge before buying groceries. See you already have the kind of clothing that you are thinking of buying. Be clear about what you need. If you go to a store, just wear something new and light. Wearing old clothes makes you feel like buying something you do not need. Wearing something light encourages you to try on stuff. Be consistent with where you buy from. Choose an online or physical store that matches your size and fabric choice best. Use cash for purchase where you can. Card purchase encourages high spending.

#2 Quality Over Quantity

Two things that I do not compromise on are – Sportswear and Jeans. I ensure to buy top quality in these, always. I know that I will use them often and I do not want them to wear off soon. It is often tempting to buy for each vacation or event. If you own good quality trekking pants, swimwear, or hats, you will manage to avoid buying on each vacation as well. Sales and fares are the biggest traps in terms of fooling customers into buying low-quality items.

#3 Care For Your Clothing

It is funny how many people go ahead and buy clothing just because of the feeling – “I do not have anything to wear”. Many bachelors would not wash or iron clothes in time. And often find less stuff to wear on important days. Introducing a little bit of discipline in maintaining clothes with washing, drying, folding, or, mending can go a long way. Make sure the clothes are buttoned up and zipped up while folding them away. Be cautious about what to dry clean, what to wash in warm water, and what to hand wash.

#4 Swap Your Clothes

The day you decide you stop purchasing mindlessly, the biggest in mind will be – what about the upcoming event? A simple solution to dress up at events is to borrow clothes from friends and family. Another hack is to swap clothes with a friend who is around your size on a regular basis. Apart from saving you a lot of money, it will make sure you don’t own clothes that don’t fit your daily lifestyle. Clothing for events is often just worn once and never again. A popular trend lately is to openly and confidently repeat high-quality dresses/clothing for events.

#5 Minimize

The simplest way to save money by far is, to not buy at all. If you have not yet tried the no-buy month or no-buy year, it is time you did. No buy year has been one of the most liberating experiences I had. If you have to buy, follow the “one in – two out” formula. Once you have reached an optimum quantity of clothing, you can continue with “one in-one out“. Owning less means spending less, maintaining less, and automatically saving more.
