Ways I Practise Minimalism In My Life

I am often asked, In what ways do you practise minimalism in your life?

In several years of my minimalism practice, there are many granular habits I picked up to keep my focus on what is important. Here are a few things I practise, to begin with:

Health

  1. Mind: I plan for rest instead of filling up the whole day.
  2. Food: I plan ahead for the week as to what groceries to buy and cook at home all the time.
  3. Hobbies: I travel once a month because I love doing it. I spend the rest of my free time on hobbies and time with family.
  4. Workouts: I am a gym member so I don’t have to keep workout stuff at home. On non-gym days, I just play individual sports outdoors that need not much except a cycle and my legs.

Career

  1. Money: I invest and pay essential bills at the beginning of the month automatically. And I stick to a budget for other expenses.
  2. Shopping: I practice Low buying on clothes, shoes, jewellery, furniture, souvenirs and other trinkets. I stick to my 4 favourite colours and only replace items intentionally when needed. Some months are simply no buy months.
  3. Daily tasks: I schedule 3 main tasks in my calendar at the start of the work day. And end the day by journalling at least 3 wins.
  4. Wardrobe: I stick to a 40-item all-year capsule wardrobe. I tried going lower but my lifestyle is full of sports and it demands some backup clothes. Within the capsule wardrobe, I practice wearing 10 items for 10 days.

Relationships

  1. Digital life: I create space between me and bad habits – limiting subscriptions, timers on social app usages, etc.
  2. Gifting: I am quite against gifts. Prefer giving and receiving perishable gifts or experiences.
  3. Travel: I travel very lightly. I usually 2 or 3-kg bag with me for short trips and a 5-kg bag for a week’s travel.
  4. Stuff: I declutter periodically instead of waiting for a day of shifting or purging. Tidying has become a daily automated habit I don’t even have to think of anymore.

These are just some surface-level things I tried. I consider my minimalist wedding a huge milestone in my pursuit of less. You can read about it here.
