How To Declutter Your Wardrobe
Please read about the 4 steps to organizing your wardrobe before you continue. I elaborated on the first step of clustering here. And now I will talk about ways to declutter your wardrobe.
#1 Minimize
Reduce
In December 2019, I played the minimalism game to declutter not just my wardrobe but my entire house. This was one of the most liberating experiences in my life. Try downsizing the items in your wardrobe and go ahead with disposing of, donating, or selling them away. The method or criteria for downsizing is up to you. But this has to be a mindset not just a one-time thing.
Reuse
Before you go and purchase any item of clothing, think about how you can reuse something you already have. Many people forget that they have a similar piece of clothing already available under piles of clothing poorly stored. This will not only unburden your wardrobe but also probe you to stop purchasing often.
#2 Organize
Visible
Just to be clear. Organizing is not the same as minimizing. Organized junk is still junk. But after you have got rid of things you don’t need, make sure you organize. If you make sure everything has a fixed place, it will be easier to avoid unnecessary purchase. Arranging clothing so they are visible can help you remember what you have. Also, gives you the opportunity to see what goes together.
Accessible
Arrange clothes in a way that they are easy to reach. Nonseasonal clothes, for instance, can be kept away on a high shelf. This will ensure space in the wardrobe for things that are needed in the current season only. Also, making the choice of whether to hang or fold, is an important one. If there is a belt you use more often, think of hanging it. The other belts can be rolled into a drawer that needs access less often.
Mix and match-able
I prefer to arrange clothes that go together. You can say that I have many mini capsule wardrobes within my wardrobe. Currently I own 30 items of clothing. I have 4 capsule wardrobes within them. But they can be easily increased to more combinations. I arrange the clothes of the same capsule next to each other. This makes mix and match-ability easier. If you do not have them in capsules yet, at least put the same categories of clothing together.
